['tæmænɪ sə'saɪətiz], nach Tammanend (17. Jahrhundert), einem Häuptling der Delawaren, benannte patriotische Gesellschaften aus der Zeit der amerikanischen Revolution. Die Tammany society in New York (gegründet 1789) wurde nach der Verbindung von Anhängern T. Jeffersons und A. Jacksons in den 1830er-Jahren unter M. van Buren und besonders ab 1860 unter »Boss« William Marcy Tweed (* 1823, ✝ 1878) zum Kern der Parteiorganisation der Demokraten in New York. Nach ihrem Hauptquartier Tammany Hall genannt, wurde diese, da sie oft in Korruptionsskandale verwickelt war, zum Inbegriff für die autokratische und korrupte Herrschaft eines professionellen Parteiführungsstabes und die »Parteimaschine«.
